sv smoke / transequatorial - 21 days: chaguaramus, trinidad to salvador, brasil

In December 2017, we began sailing passages along the coast of South America to deliver Smoke, a Chuck Paine Bougainvillea 62' to Punta del Este, Uruguay.

James had been managing the refit of the boat in the Caribbean, the vessel was for sale, and the plan was to keep moving her south to Uruguay, where she could remain indefinitely until she sold.

The first leg was 21 days - from the Port of Chaguaramus, Trinidad to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil over the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Anasazi Girl was stored on the land in St. David's, Grenada while we sailed Smoke south. Super nice sailing for our delivery crew - in the "naked" latitudes off the coast of Brazil.

Despite the size of Smoke compared to Anasazi Girl, somehow all of five of us ended up in the little pilot of house for most of the passage. Atlantic coast of Northern Brazil. Chaguaramus to Salvador de Bahia.

After we had stocked the boat with 200 diapers, Tarzan (at age 1 year & 8 months) decided that this passage was the time he would quit. He preferred the feel of the silky oak seat was better than stinky pañales. Atlantic coast of Northern Brazil. Chaguaramus to Salvador de Bahia.

coconut dreams / grenada

On Saturday, May 13th, 2017 we tied up at Grenada Marine's dock in St. David's after 21 days of sailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Before we left Ushuaia, my kids and I had been dreaming about drinking coconuts and swimming in the clear & warm waters of the Caribbean. So amazing to think that after 41 days of coastal sailing from Ushuaia to Grenada that the Magellanic forests of the south have been replaced by the tropical jungles of the Caribe.

All landfalls are special, but this one was a very big deal for us after three years of being dismasted & shipwrecked on the Chilean island of Navarino. The long voyage here from the southernmost tip of South America also marked the completion of our family circumnavigation with our two oldest kids.

Within a week of landfall, Anasazi Girl was clean, stripped down from the voyage & ready for a haul-out and we were left to savor the sunshine, sand, coconuts, nutmeg, & organic chocolate of the spice island.

transequatorial passage / 21 days: rio de janeiro, brazil to st. david's, grenada, west indies

We had a smooth non-stop passage from Rio to Grenada, completing our circumnavigation with the two oldest kids (Tormentina & Raivo), when we crossed our own path from 2011 on the paper chart just off the coast of Recife. Back then Tormentina was three and Tarzan was one.

So wonderful to be naked & warm in the waters of the north Atlantic after so many Southern Ocean miles of blasting the heat and being bundled in all of our technical layers. We said goodbye to the Albatross & thick kelp of the south and traded them in for flying fish, needle fish, & the more delicate seaweeds and algaes of warmer waters.

My oldest daughter Tormentina was a huge help with our youngest, Tarzan - keeping him safe and being an extra set of hands when we needed - during sail changes, systems checks, cooking, cleanring... So grateful for her maturity & responsibility up the entire coast of South America - we couldn't have done it without her.

We made landfall on May 13, 2017 after 21 days at sea. Our children were ages 8, 6, 4, & 1.
