After servicing our life raft, fixing our alternator, doing a photography commission, and buttoning up our belongings in Natales, we returned to Isla Navarino to Anasazi Girl. Our plan was to sail back to Ushuaia, and depart from there for the completion of our circumnavigation with the family.

Happy Girl so excited about our new freedom on the water. She drove as we came into port and decided to do a 360 turn on the way to the dock. Argentine Navy called us on Chanel 16 to make sure everything was okay.

Cape Horn & Antarctic expedition boats side-tide at the Micalvi. Anasazi Girl is in the middle of three rows of boats, five boats in front, four boats behind, and two boats on either side. The inlet is narrow, so a bit of logistics and organizing needed to move her out of the our berth for our first trip since our mast was broken.

experiental education

Isla Navarino always provided our children with opportunities for experiental education. The island itself is part of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve, with a field station there that is part of the University of Magallanes. Scientists from Punta Arenas and many different parts of the world would often pass through town. The Puerto Williams campus of UMAG always had an open door for our kids to visit their labs and the researchers were always kind and willing to share their work with us.

On the hillside above Seno Lauta Harbour, my kids always made a daily stop on our walks to smell the flowers, pick fresh mint & calafate berries, or would simply sit in the tall grass & watch the beautiful view of the Beagle Channel and Martial mountain range. My younger daughter Pearl still tells me that she misses her mint patch.

optis sailing in the beagle

Optis headed out to the Beagle Channel. We feel so fortunate that our kids have had the opportunity to learn to sail in such a dynamic landscape of these austral waters.
