the simple joy of experiencing nature / grenada

Perpertual world travel with our children since their births has allowed us to live a minimalist lifestyle, with very few things that we carry around with us besides the real basic life necessities.

When birthdays & holidays come around, we don't buy toys. Gifts from us usually involve tools, cultural events, art supplies, music, or some form of experience that supports a passion of their particular interest.

When we're in port, the kids have no-rules/free use of devices to watch movies, play games, and educate themselves. When there is internet, they binge on information & entertainment.

They make prolific art - paintings that get sent all over the world to friends they have met on their travels, natural sculptures or art installations that disappear with the elements, sketchbooks filled with drawings.

Physical recreation is a daily necessity and takes on a form that best fits our current environment.

Endless entertainment comes from the simple joy of exploring and physically experiencing the natural environment. My kids are interested in learning about the local flora & fauna, appreciating its beauty, danger, and also its delicacy. Through this interest, they grow a natural desire to preserve, protect & respect it.

Sea snails, urchins, coral, Hibiscus tiliaceus (beach maho), found shells, and the ebb & flow of the tide...

falling in love all over again with the sub-polar forests of navarino

Our return to Isla Navarino last November was truly magical. It was not just that we had a new mast for Anasazi Girl, but we had a new beautiful person in our family. Pretty incredible to see the island for the first time through his eyes.

So wonderful to return to the same forest paths we had walked after surviving such a close call at sea, the same clearings we had contemplated the future of our family, boat and lives as sailors, and to smell & touch the same pristine flora that brought me joy while I was pregnant with Tarzan.

Springtime was in full swing and the rebirth of the island felt so much more powerful & meaningful now with the promise of a new life for our family of six.

The fantastic four harvest sub-polar salad greens.
